Aston Villa circling the Champions League winner for summer transfer

Aston Villa are currently circling a Champions League winner as one of their latest transfer targets.

Aston Villa have recently been linked with another new target. It could be a busy summer for the club as they look to strengthen the squad and potentially replace key players who could leave before the transfer window closes.

The latest name appears to fall into the latter category. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier has emerged as a target for two Premier League clubs, as reported by Caught Offside.

“Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are interested in signing the French goalkeeper.”

Another Premier League side, Liverpool, were also reportedly monitoring Chevalier before Alisson Becker decided to remain at Anfield. The former Lille man appears to be in high demand.

His contract situation

The former Lille goalkeeper is under contract with PSG until the summer of 2030. His current valuation is believed to be around £48 million.

Initially, Chevalier was expected to establish himself as PSG’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma, a situation that reportedly led to the Italian international seeking a move to Manchester City.

Aston Villa would likely only pursue a deal, whether permanent or on loan, if their current number one, Emiliano Martinez, decides to leave.

Following Liverpool’s decision to keep Alisson as their first-choice goalkeeper, Juventus appear to be Martinez’s most realistic suitor. However, after failing to qualify for the Champions League, the Italian giants may struggle to convince the Argentine to leave Villa Park, especially with Villa set to compete in Europe’s elite competition next season.

Nevertheless, should Martinez leave, it is interesting to see which one would Villa opt to chase among Chevalier, James Trafford or Moritz Nicolas eventually. Alternatively, it might be surprising if Aston Villa transfer business would also consider signing the free agent but experienced one like Alex Remiro from Real Sociedad.

Lucas Chevalier’s form

Chevalier started the season in impressive fashion and played a key role in PSG’s UEFA Super Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur, including a decisive contribution in the penalty shootout.

However, his campaign became more difficult as the season progressed. The 24-year-old struggled to maintain consistency and was criticised for a number of costly errors in important matches.

His performances were questioned in defeats against Monaco and Marseille in Ligue 1, as well as against Bayern Munich and Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League.

During the second half of the season, Chevalier largely lost his place to Matvey Safonov, who had initially been expected to serve as his understudy. Following ankle and hamstring injuries, the French goalkeeper failed to regain his spot and did not feature again after returning to fitness.

The goalkeeper, who has earned one senior international cap for France, made 26 appearances in all competitions and kept 10 clean sheets.

According to FotMob data, Chevalier recorded a save percentage of 71.7 per cent, a penalty-save rate of 33.3 per cent, and a passing accuracy of 87.7 per cent.

What he arguably lacks is the experience at the highest level. A move to the Premier League and the opportunity to play regularly could help him develop both his game and his mentality as he enters the prime years of his career.
