Michael Carrick’s Manchester United Midfield Rebuild Will Extend Far Beyond Éderson Signing

Manchester United’s summer transfer strategy remains focused on a thorough midfield overhaul rather than a simple short-term fix to their problems.

The club are targeting three new midfielders this summer, with Atalanta’s Éderson expected to become the first arrival when he officially completes his move in early July.

That deal appears to be nearing its conclusion, with Sky Sports reporting United have agreed a package worth £34m plus £3.8m in add-ons for the Brazilian midfielder.

Éderson is set to sign a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of an additional year built into the agreement.

Jason Wilcox is described as a significant admirer of the 25-year-old, who is viewed as central to United’s preparations for their Champions League return.

The Guardian reported that Éderson fits squarely into United’s broader plan to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level once again.

Beyond Éderson, United’s midfield shortlist is still believed to include Mateus Fernandes, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Alex Scott, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson.

The breadth of that list signals that United are not searching for one specific type of midfielder, but rather a combination of energy, control, ball-carrying, defensive security and long-term potential.

The Mateus Fernandes link stands out in particular, with West Ham reportedly valuing the player at around £80m, and Real Madrid and PSG also credited with serious interest.

Carrick has managed too many matches where the midfield appeared overrun, and this rebuild represents his best chance to correct that structural weakness.

Éderson’s intensity and ball-winning qualities will address some of those issues, but the Brazilian alone cannot be expected to transform the entire unit overnight.

Adding two further midfielders makes practical sense, with one potentially offering deeper control and another bringing more creativity or physicality in a No.8 role.

Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo are among those who would benefit most from having better balance and support built around them in midfield.

Casemiro’s departure and a sustained lack of consistency in central areas have made the midfield United’s most pressing area of concern heading into the new campaign.

The real challenge for the club is avoiding the trap of accumulating high-profile names without assembling a group of players that genuinely suits Carrick’s style of football.
