Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke has agreed personal terms with Tottenham Hotspur, according to reports from Dutch media outlet Voetbal International.
The 25-year-old Dutch international has made his intentions crystal clear, telling his representatives that it is “Spurs and only Spurs” this summer.
Prominent Voetbal International journalist Joost Blaauwhof broke the news, confirming that Van Hecke is no longer in dialogue with any other interested clubs.
Blaauwhof stated: “NEWS: Jan Paul van Hecke is out. It’s Spurs and only Spurs. The Oranje international is awaiting agreement between Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, but is no longer speaking with any other club. Personal terms agreed. More to follow.”
With his personal terms fully locked in, the centre-back is now patiently waiting for the two clubs to reach a financial agreement on a transfer fee.
That agreement, however, remains the central obstacle, with Brighton having already rejected two formal bids from Spurs within the past week alone.
Brighton chief executive Paul Barber has been firm in his public stance, making clear that any departure from the club must make total financial sense for the South Coast side.
Despite Van Hecke entering the final year of his current contract, Brighton are holding firm on an estimated valuation of €50 million and show no sign of softening their position.
The Seagulls have a long-established reputation as stubborn negotiators in the transfer market, and this situation appears to be no different from previous high-profile departures.
Should Tottenham eventually meet Brighton’s demands, Van Hecke would become Roberto De Zerbi’s third significant signing of a busy summer window.
De Zerbi is overseeing a major squad rebuild at Spurs following a difficult campaign that saw the club survive relegation on the final day of the season.
The Italian coach has already secured the services of Scotland international Andy Robertson, with a deal for free agent Marcos Senesi also reported to be nearing completion.
Van Hecke is considered the priority target among the three, having previously worked under De Zerbi during their time together at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.
That familiarity with the manager’s tactical demands makes the Dutch international an ideal fit as De Zerbi looks to build a more defensively solid and cohesive unit.
