Tottenham Hotspur are pushing to secure a permanent deal for Joao Palhinha after the Portuguese midfielder impressed during his loan spell last season.

The defensive midfielder was a key figure for the North London club throughout his temporary stint, earning widespread praise for his performances in the Premier League.

Palhinha is now ready to make a decision on his future, with two clubs firmly in contention to sign him on a permanent basis this summer.

According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Tottenham and Sporting CP are the two concrete options currently on the table for the experienced international.

Plettenberg wrote on X: “Joao Palhinha wants to make a decision on his future soon. The two concrete options are currently Tottenham and Sporting CP. Talks are ongoing. Tottenham currently have good chances.”

However, a key sticking point remains over the transfer fee, with Tottenham hoping to renegotiate the terms set by Bayern Munich before completing any agreement.

Plettenberg added: “However and as revealed, Spurs want to renegotiate with FC Bayern. The option to buy was set at €25m guaranteed, with potential add-ons that could raise the fee to up to €30m. Tottenham want to pay less.”

Bayern Munich are eager to recoup as much money as possible from Palhinha’s departure and will not want to let him leave cheaply after investing in the player.

The German champions have made it clear that Palhinha has no future at the club, meaning a permanent exit this summer is the most likely outcome for all parties involved.

Sporting CP remain a genuine alternative, and the Lisbon club will be monitoring the situation closely as negotiations between Tottenham and Bayern continue to develop.

A return to Portugal could appeal to Palhinha on a personal level, though consistent Premier League football represents a strong draw at this point in his career.

Tottenham’s task now is to convince Bayern Munich to lower their asking price while continuing to hold off interest from Sporting CP in the race for his signature.
