Andoni Iraola has reportedly pushed for a short-term deal at Liverpool, insisting on signing only a two-year contract as he prepares to take charge.
The Spanish manager is departing Bournemouth when his contract with the Cherries expires, with his move to Liverpool now understood to be close to completion.
It was Iraola himself who insisted on the shorter contract length, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, because that is simply how the Spaniard operates at every club he manages.
Jacobs posted on X to confirm the terms being discussed, stating: “Andoni Iraola is expected to sign a two-year contract at Liverpool. Verbal terms in place, as reported earlier.”
He later followed up with a significant detail, writing: “The short-term contract is at Andoni Iraola’s insistence. It is how the Spaniard operates with all clubs.”
Iraola is set to come in and replace Arne Slot, who recently departed Liverpool, leaving the club searching for a new head coach.
The 43-year-old’s preference for shorter contracts may raise questions among Liverpool supporters about his long-term commitment to the club and its ambitions.
Liverpool themselves appear comfortable with the arrangement, having agreed to the two-year structure rather than pushing for greater security over a longer deal.
Bournemouth experienced something similar, with Iraola’s contract running down until it expired, allowing him to move on freely rather than the club controlling the situation.
That same scenario could theoretically play out again at Anfield after two years, potentially leaving Liverpool in a similar position to the one Bournemouth found themselves in this summer.
However, if Iraola impresses with the Reds, the club will have the opportunity to open extension talks and convince him to remain part of what could become an exciting project.
According to the report, only clubs of the calibre of Real Madrid and Barcelona would realistically tempt Iraola away from Liverpool, should they ever express an interest in him.
For now, Liverpool fans will be focusing on the positives, with verbal terms already in place and the full agreement expected to be formalised in the coming period.
Iraola’s track record at Bournemouth, where he recorded 47 wins from his time in charge, will give the Anfield faithful reason for confidence heading into his tenure.
