Ronald Donkor has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract extension with Red Bull New York, keeping the 21-year-old midfielder at the club through the 2029-30 MLS season.
The deal also includes an option for the 2030-31 season, securing Donkor’s long-term future with the club in Harrison, New Jersey.
Donkor had been in the final year of his original contract, which he first signed with Red Bull New York back in 2023.
Red Bulls head of sport Julian de Guzman welcomed the news, expressing his excitement about retaining the young midfielder for the foreseeable future.
“Ronnie has developed into a really important member of our club, and we are very excited to keep him with the club for the long-term,” de Guzman said in a statement.
“He is a very hard worker that gives his all for our club and we are looking forward to seeing him continue to succeed here,” de Guzman added.
Donkor scored his first career MLS goal in April when the Red Bulls played to a 4-4 draw against D.C. United on April 22, with Red Bulls head of global soccer Jürgen Klopp in attendance.
The Accra, Ghana native has recorded career highs this season in MLS starts with 14, assists with four, and minutes played with 1,183.
Speaking with reporters in April, Donkor credited Red Bulls head coach Michael Bradley and assistant coach Ibrahim Sekagya for helping him improve this season.
“They are the people who are just making me who I am now,” Donkor said, reflecting on the influence both coaches have had on his development.
“Because even if things are not going well, the way they talk to me, the way they push me, that makes me go forward more,” he continued.
Bradley described Donkor as an “integral part” of the Red Bulls this season and said the midfielder has a “very bright future ahead of him.”
Before arriving in New Jersey, Donkor began his career in Mali, where he played for Guidars FC in the West African nation.
The contract news arrives as Major League Soccer’s season is currently paused for the World Cup, giving Donkor time to reflect on a strong campaign so far.
Red Bull New York has endured a mixed start to the 2026 season but entered the break on a positive run, earning points in their final four matches and winning three of their last four games.
The club sits fifth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 6-5-4 through 15 matches, and will look to Donkor as a key figure when the season resumes.
