The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA playoffs over the weekend, setting up a finals clash against the New York Knicks.

The matchup has generated enormous excitement among basketball fans, with both teams boasting significant star power heading into the series.

Spurs star Victor Wembanyama and Knicks standout Jalen Brunson both won MVP awards from their respective conference finals, making this a marquee individual rivalry.

Ahead of Game 1, a classic Wembanyama quote from years past has resurfaced online and is rapidly gaining traction across social media platforms.

The NBA shared the old quote, which Wembanyama originally delivered at the moment he was drafted by the Spurs back in 2023.

The Spurs selected Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick that year, a move that has since proved to be a franchise-changing decision for San Antonio.

At the 2023 draft, Wembanyama stated that “the universe” told him he was going to become a member of the Spurs.

The NBA’s post featuring that quote was viewed more than 160,000 times in less than three hours, and the number was continuing to grow at the time of writing.

When asked recently whether the universe had told him anything about reaching the NBA Finals, Wembanyama answered affirmatively but was quick to add important context.

“Of course, but (it) doesn’t mean you don’t gotta go get (it),” Wembanyama said, emphasising that hard work remains just as important as any sense of destiny.

He further elaborated on that philosophy, saying that “at the end of the day, you gotta keep doing it (and) make it happen,” underlining his belief that results must be earned on the court.

The combination of destiny and determination appears to be working in Wembanyama’s favour as he now leads the Spurs into the NBA Finals stage.
