Aloha, Hawaii. The Sentry is moving to San Diego.
The PGA Tour announced Monday that Sentry Insurance will assume the title sponsorship of the Tour’s long-standing event held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. Effective beginning next season, the tournament will be called The Sentry.
If that name sounds familiar, that’s because it is.
The Sentry, sponsored by Sentry Insurance, had long been the Tour’s season kickoff event held in Hawaii, although it was canceled this year and reports of its demise began to circulate. In April, the Tour confirmed reports it won’t return to Hawaii in 2027.
At the Players Championship in March, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said one of the Tour’s six themes important to its future would be a splashy West Coast season kickoff — “we want to open big with a marquee event at an iconic venue,” he said — in late January. Pieces of the 2027 schedule have slowly leaked out over the last couple months, although The Sentry won’t be the event to start the new season next year. Its dates are Jan. 27-30, 2027, which includes a Saturday finish so it doesn’t interfere with NFL Playoffs. The American Express in La Quinta, Calif., has already been confirmed for Jan. 21-24, 2027.
At that aforementioned Rolapp press conference, he said more significant changes will likely take place in 2028, which includes his two-track schedule. It’s unclear where The Sentry might fit in then, although it could be a logical spot to begin future seasons.
The PGA Tour has played annually at Torrey Pines since 1968, using both its North Course and South Course for its events. (The South Course has also hosted two U.S. Opens.) The tournament has changed names several times over the years, although it’s been the Farmers Insurance Open from 2010 to 2026, with Justin Rose winning the latest addition. Reports first surfaced in 2024 that Farmers Insurance would not renew its contract at Torrey Pines when it expired in 2026.
“For 75 years the PGA Tour has hosted elite competition in San Diego, including the last 60 at revered Torrey Pines, and we are proud to build upon that legacy and longtime philanthropic impact with our partners at Sentry Insurance,” Rolapp said in a press release. “We are pleased to have the support of Sentry and the Century Club of San Diego to further grow what fans and players have long recognized as one of our game’s most celebrated venues and events.”
