Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that Liverpool have already begun formal talks with Andoni Iraola as they look to replace sacked manager Arne Slot.
The news emerged following an end-of-season review at Anfield that resulted in Slot’s dismissal, prompting club officials to act with urgency in their managerial search.
Jacobs broke the story on X, posting a direct update that signalled how seriously Liverpool are pursuing the former Bournemouth boss.
The journalist’s post read: “Talks between Andoni Iraola and Liverpool are already underway and are expected to move quickly.”
Liverpool’s decision to approach Iraola represents a calculated philosophical shift for the Merseyside club following a disappointing campaign.
The club finished fifth in the Premier League under Slot, and FSG along with the Anfield hierarchy are now determined to implement a more aggressive and front-foot style of play.
Iraola, who departed Bournemouth at the end of the season, is widely considered to perfectly match the tactical profile Liverpool are seeking in their next head coach.
The 43-year-old Spaniard built a strong reputation on the south coast for his high-pressing, intense, and brave attacking setups throughout his time in charge.
A key factor expected to accelerate negotiations is Iraola’s pre-existing working relationship with Liverpool’s Sporting Director Richard Hughes, who originally brought him to Bournemouth.
That familiarity between the two parties is anticipated to fast-track the process, with Liverpool keen to avoid any disruption to their pre-season preparations.
While Iraola has clearly emerged as the frontrunner, reports from Sky Sports indicate Liverpool have not closed the door on other candidates currently in consideration.
VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness remains in the conversation, having earned widespread praise for his progressive style of football in the Bundesliga this season.
RC Lens boss Pierre Sage has also surfaced as an outside contender, with the Frenchman reportedly expressing a lifelong ambition to manage at Anfield.
However, with formal discussions already progressing at pace, Iraola remains firmly in the driving seat to take charge at one of England’s most storied clubs.
