Manchester United have emerged as the frontrunners in the race to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer transfer window.
Sources have informed CaughtOffside that Manchester United’s transfer committee has “accelerated talks” with the player’s representatives over a potential move.
West Ham signed Fernandes from Southampton last summer for a fee of €44 million, making him a significant investment for the club.
However, a disappointing season and the prospect of a major rebuild have substantially increased the likelihood of the Brazilian midfielder departing.
West Ham have placed a €50-60 million valuation on Fernandes, though that figure is expected to decrease following the club’s relegation.
The midfielder is contracted at West Ham until 2030 and has no release clause, which strengthens the club’s negotiating hand considerably.
Financial pressures on the club, however, mean a sale during the current summer window is becoming increasingly likely despite that strong contractual position.
Manchester United view Fernandes as a long-term midfield solution, with reports suggesting he could line up alongside club captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes himself is said to be attracted by the prospect of playing Champions League football, which could prove a decisive factor in his decision.
Arsenal remain interested in signing Fernandes, with the Gunners reportedly viewing him as a replacement for Christian Norgaard.
Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are also closely monitoring the situation, while Chelsea and Aston Villa have joined the growing list of suitors.
Italian interest is equally significant, with Inter, Juventus, and Napoli all keeping tabs on the 21-year-old midfielder’s situation at West Ham.
The sheer volume of clubs involved makes this one of the most widely contested midfield transfer sagas of the 2026 summer window.
