Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has publicly responded to the sacking of manager Arne Slot, sharing a heartfelt message on social media shortly after the news broke.
Club ownership group FSG announced they had parted ways with the Dutch manager with immediate effect, sending shockwaves through the football world.
The decision came just one year after Slot guided Liverpool to their historic 20th Premier League title during a remarkable debut season at the club.
A turbulent 2025-26 campaign ultimately ended with Liverpool finishing fifth, prompting the club hierarchy to conclude that a change of direction was necessary.
Van Dijk took to Instagram within hours of the official club statement, posting a photo of himself embracing Slot on the touchline while wearing Premier League champions t-shirts.
The Liverpool captain accompanied the image with a caption that read: “We’ll never forget winning the Premier League in our first season together. Thank you trainer, and best of luck to you and your family for the future.”
While Slot’s debut season had been a resounding success, his second campaign brought inconsistent performances, poor results, and a reportedly soured atmosphere at the training ground.
Central to that deterioration was a very public falling out between Slot and Mohamed Salah, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history.
The dispute began with Salah’s explosive interview in November following the game against Leeds, which led to Slot dropping him from the Champions League clash against Inter.
The feud escalated when Salah, having announced he would leave at the end of the season, publicly expressed concerns over what he described as a deteriorating culture behind the scenes at the club.
Slot responded directly in a press conference ahead of the Chelsea fixture, aiming a notable jibe at Salah after the Egyptian’s comments became public knowledge.
The situation reached a breaking point when Salah posted on social media following a defeat to Aston Villa, stressing that Liverpool needed to return to playing what he called “heavy metal football.”
A number of Liverpool players liked that post, widely interpreted as a clear sign that Slot had lost the support of the dressing room entirely.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Salah’s social media post proved to be a key factor in FSG’s ultimate decision to part ways with Slot at the end of the season.
Van Dijk’s tribute, while warm and sincere, draws a line under a turbulent chapter at Anfield as Liverpool now look ahead to finding their next manager.
