Oklahoma City Thunder Reportedly Consider Giannis Antetokounmpo Pursuit After Stunning Playoff Elimination

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s reign as NBA champions came to an abrupt end after they dropped Game 7 at home to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals.

Mark Daigneault’s side entered the postseason as heavy favourites, but their shock exit has raised serious questions about the roster’s ceiling heading into the offseason.

The Thunder are widely regarded as one of the league’s most asset-rich franchises, stocked with draft capital and a core of talented young players.

That depth gives Sam Presti significant flexibility to make a major move in the trade market should the front office decide a shake-up is necessary.

Giannis Antetokounmpo has been the subject of widespread league rumours, and Oklahoma City has emerged as a potential destination that would send shockwaves across the NBA.

League sources had previously indicated the Thunder would sit out the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, but the stunning playoff exit appears to have changed the conversation.

“League sources have long maintained that Oklahoma City would not take part in the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes that will dominate the summertime conversation, but this sort of stunning finish is enough to re-spark that conversation,” Sam Amick of The Athletic reported.

Antetokounmpo may not be the only superstar name on Oklahoma City’s radar, with Cleveland big man Evan Mobley also drawing reported interest from the franchise.

“Nothing should be off the table when the end goal wasn’t reached. There has long been chatter about the Thunder having interest in Cleveland big man Evan Mobley,” Amick added.

The Thunder are expected to lose Isaiah Hartenstein due to second apron restrictions, though they will welcome back Thomas Sorber after he missed his entire rookie season through injury.

Mobley could potentially slot in as a replacement for Chet Holmgren, who struggled against Victor Wembanyama during the Western Conference Finals series against San Antonio.

Ultimately, this offseason represents a defining crossroads for the franchise as they look to build a winning team around two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
