Jeremie Frimpong Explains Why He Celebrated Gabriel Magalhaes’ Penalty Miss In Champions League Final

Liverpool defender Jeremie Frimpong has explained why he celebrated so heavily after Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Dutchman uploaded a video of himself cheering after Gabriel Magalhaes missed his crucial penalty during the shootout in Budapest.

Frimpong, his family and friends jumped up and down enthusiastically when PSG secured their second consecutive Champions League title.

Both Eberechi Eze and Gabriel missed the target as Arsenal were beaten on penalties by the French side.

Frimpong was not the only player to welcome Arsenal’s defeat, with Richarlison continuing his feud with Gabriel by mocking the miss on social media.

Erling Haaland also got involved, though Frimpong insisted his celebrations were not intended to rub salt into Arsenal’s wounds.

His original video showed him and others at home celebrating Gabriel’s miss, captioned with “Let it all work out”, a reference to a song called “Indecision” by Sampha.

The tune has been adopted by Arsenal fans over the last year and was notably used as background music in Eze’s transfer announcement video.

Despite the video and its caption, Frimpong uploaded another post which said: “Chill me and my friend made a bet, and I won, that’s why I was happy” alongside a laughing and shrug of the shoulders emoji.

The disappointment of Saturday night’s dramatic defeat was put to one side on Sunday, as North London was turned red with Arsenal fans lining the streets to welcome Mikel Arteta and his players home.

The celebrations centred on Arsenal’s Premier League title triumph, and anyone unaware of events would never have guessed a Champions League final loss had occurred less than 24 hours earlier.

Frimpong may also have been reflecting on his own difficult debut Premier League season after arriving from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

He regularly found himself deployed at right-wing instead of his usual right-back position as he struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

Frimpong’s performances resulted in him being left out of the Netherlands squad for this summer’s World Cup, adding further frustration to an already challenging campaign.

As he was still coming to terms with that disappointment, news broke of Arne Slot’s sacking by Liverpool, confirmed just before the Champions League final.

When Slot’s departure was announced, Frimpong uploaded a picture alongside the Premier League winner which read: “Thank you for everything coach. All the best for the future.”
