Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United is under fresh scrutiny after reports in Italy claimed the defender has been offered to Inter Milan.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter directors Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio have been receiving calls from agents and intermediaries exploring defensive options for next season.

Maguire’s name has been put forward as part of those conversations, adding a new dimension to his situation at Old Trafford.

The Serie A champions are planning changes at the back, although Udinese defender Oumar Solet is currently viewed as a stronger priority for the club.

Maguire arrived at Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million, making him the world’s most expensive defender at the time.

His United career has been defined by sharp contrasts, moving from club captain to heavy criticism before fighting his way back into relevance.

The defender signed a new contract in April that runs until 2027, with the option of an additional year, making this reported interest all the more surprising.

United confirmed that extension after a much-improved spell under Michael Carrick, with the club praising Maguire’s leadership and professionalism throughout.

End-of-season ratings highlighted him as one of the more dependable defensive figures in a campaign that ended with Champions League qualification for United.

Still, Maguire is now 33 years old, and United are expected to refresh parts of their squad this summer.

If Inter want an experienced centre-back bringing leadership, aerial strength and Premier League experience, he would at least make sense as a short-term option.

A move to Inter would be fascinating, but leaving after recently signing a new deal would represent a significant decision for the defender.

Serie A could nonetheless suit Maguire, with his strengths in positioning, heading, organisation and box defending potentially standing out even more in Italy.

For United, the decision ultimately depends on whether Michael Carrick prioritises youth and pace or values the experience Maguire brings in a Champions League season.
