Djed Spence wasted no time responding to Arsenal’s heartbreak after PSG beat the Gunners on penalties in Budapest on Saturday night.
The Tottenham full-back quoted an old Arsenal social media post on X almost immediately after the final whistle of the penalty shoot-out defeat.
Spence posted a pair of wide-open eyes and an open padlock emoji above Arsenal’s original February post, which had mocked him using his own social media format against him.
Earlier in the season, Spence had developed a habit of posting images of wingers he had dominated in matches, jokingly suggesting he had “locked” them up.
During a strong run of form, he uploaded mocked-up images of opposition wingers behind bars and posted phrases such as “Bring me your favourite winger” after a win against Manchester City.
In pre-season, he had posted an image of Bukayo Saka on the floor beside him after a Hong Kong friendly against Arsenal, captioning it simply “on to the next one.”
Arsenal’s social media team turned the format against him in February, posting a slow-motion clip of Spence being dispossessed by Saka and Cristhian Mosquera at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, captioned “Locked up” with a padlock emoji.
Spence bided his time before responding, and his post has since received 177,000 likes, with Tottenham supporters replying with images of their club’s Europa League win last season.
Spence was not alone among Spurs players in responding on social media, with Richarlison posting a video of a child appearing to cry before bursting into laughter after Gabriel blazed his crucial penalty over the crossbar.
The reaction carries extra significance given Spence will soon join up with England’s World Cup squad under Thomas Tuchel, where he will be teammates with Arsenal’s Saka, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke.
Spence played Tottenham’s final league game of the season with a broken jaw sustained after an elbow from Chelsea’s Liam Delap in the previous match, underlining his determination throughout a difficult period.
Richarlison will not be at the World Cup after missing out on Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad, making his social media contribution purely for personal satisfaction rather than as international teammates prepare to meet.
This is not the first time Spence has chosen to let a moment breathe before firing back at his critics publicly and pointedly.
In May 2022, he posted an image of himself with the Championship play-off trophy and a cigar, tagging former Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock with the caption: “Oh, Where’s my Manners! Welcome to Twitter.”
That post was a direct response to Warnock having said he “could see him playing non-league football in five years’ time,” questioning Spence’s attitude and commitment entirely.
Four years on, Spence has made 85 appearances for Tottenham and is preparing to represent England at a World Cup, proving his best responses come both on and off the pitch.
