Orlando Storm Forced To Host UFL Playoff Game In Columbus After Soccer Match Blocks Home Stadium

The Orlando Storm have clinched a home playoff game but will be unable to play it in their home stadium due to a soccer conflict.

The UFL confirmed that the Storm’s home stadium will be “unavailable” for the June 7 playoff game “due to prior commitments connected to hosting an international soccer match.”

The game will not be played in Orlando’s home stadium, its home city, or even its home state of Florida.

The Storm will instead host their playoff game in Columbus, Ohio, a significant displacement for a team that earned home-field advantage.

The UFL stated that it “worked extensively to identify all potential options and find an alternative venue to keep the game in Central Florida.”

The league explained that “the largest football-capable venues in Orlando and the surrounding area are either already in use or under renovation, including UCF’s Acrisure Bounce House stadium and Camping World Stadium.”

The UFL added that “additional venues were also evaluated, but were not viable options due to broadcast requirements and operational and logistical constraints.”

The Columbus Aviators, whose stadium will host the game, have already been eliminated from playoff contention this season.

That means the Aviators cannot serve as the road team for Orlando’s so-called home playoff game being played inside the Aviators’ own stadium.

The Storm, D.C. Defenders, and St. Louis Battlehawks have all clinched playoff berths heading into the postseason.

The Birmingham Stallions and Louisville Kings are still competing for the final remaining playoff spot in what has become a tight race.

The situation reflects a broader trend this summer of soccer repeatedly taking precedence over American football at major stadiums across the country.
