Jack Wilshere Urges Mikel Arteta To Start Myles Lewis-Skelly In Midfield For Champions League Final Against PSG

Arsenal academy graduate Jack Wilshere has called on Mikel Arteta to deploy Myles Lewis-Skelly in central midfield for the Champions League final.

Arteta’s starting eleven for the showpiece occasion will be the most important selection of his managerial career to date.

Arsenal face a formidable Paris Saint-Germain side that has dominated European football throughout the campaign.

Wilshere, who now manages Luton Town, knows Lewis-Skelly almost as well as Arteta does, having coached the teenager in Arsenal’s youth setup.

Despite Lewis-Skelly mainly featuring at left-back, Wilshere believes the youngster is more than capable of excelling in the middle against Luis Enrique’s side.

Speaking exclusively at the SoccerAid media day, Wilshere said: “Yes. What I love about Myles and what he’s done since he got to the first team is that he has the same character.”

Wilshere added: “He has the same personality, he goes towards the pressure, in life in general but in football as well. I’m sure if he was asked to play in midfield he would do a great job.”

The former England international also reflected on his time coaching Lewis-Skelly, saying: “I worked with Myles and I thought he would be a midfielder. I think to play in midfield at the top level is really, really hard.”

Wilshere continued: “Mikel has done outstanding to find a position for him because he has so much ability and his understanding of the game, as you can see he can play left-back, midfield and I think he will end up in midfield.”

He added: “It might not be as consistent as he wants, right now, but I think eventually he will and I think everyone has seen it. It’s hard to play in midfield and not everyone can do it.”

Wilshere concluded: “But he has the ability, he has the awareness and I was happy to see him there. I know how much he can influence a team, the way he received and drives forward – I’m happy for him.”

Lewis-Skelly spent a large portion of the season on the bench, competing with Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie for the left-back position.

It was a 3-0 victory over Fulham that handed Lewis-Skelly his opportunity to start in central midfield for the Gunners.

That decision may yet prove to be the turning point that cements his place as one of Arsenal’s key figures in Budapest.
