The Chicago Bulls have expressed interest in and spoken to Kevin Young as they continue their search for a new head coach, according to ESPN.
Young is currently the men’s basketball head coach at Brigham Young University, having taken charge of the Cougars program in recent years.
He reportedly signed a seven-year, $30MM contract with BYU during the 2024 offseason, tying him to the college program on a long-term deal.
Young has previously interviewed for several NBA head coaching vacancies, making him a recognisable name in coaching circles around the league.
A former Division II college basketball player, Young transitioned quickly into coaching after his playing career came to an end.
He spent several years working as both an assistant and head coach in the G League, which was previously known as the D-League.
Young joined the Philadelphia 76ers as an assistant coach in 2016, marking his first step into the NBA coaching ranks.
He then landed the top assistant coaching role with the Phoenix Suns in 2020, further building his reputation as a rising coaching talent.
Young, a native of Salt Lake City, spent four years as the associate head coach in Phoenix before eventually making the move to BYU.
The 44-year-old is at least the eleventh coach the Bulls have spoken to about their current head coaching vacancy, according to a tracker of the team’s search.
The sheer volume of candidates the Bulls have spoken to highlights just how seriously the organisation is approaching the process of finding their next head coach.
Young’s background spans multiple levels of basketball, from the developmental league all the way through to a prominent role on an NBA coaching staff.
His experience as a top assistant with the Suns, combined with his current head coaching role at BYU, makes him a credible candidate for the Bulls position.
