Xabi Alonso To Assess Nicolas Jackson During Pre-Season As Enzo Maresca Fallout Details Emerge

Chelsea will welcome Nicolas Jackson back to Stamford Bridge this summer as incoming manager Xabi Alonso prepares to evaluate the striker’s future.

Jackson spent the 2025/26 season on loan with Bayern Munich, with the German champions holding an obligation to buy the Senegal international at the end of his loan spell for around £56million.

That purchase obligation was conditional on Jackson making a certain number of appearances for Bayern Munich, though the exact figure required to trigger the clause remains unknown.

The 24-year-old is now set to return to Chelsea and will be handed the chance to impress Alonso during pre-season, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Alonso, who is set to officially begin his role on July 1, will assess Jackson alongside fellow striker options Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emegha.

Jackson still holds a good reputation within Chelsea, and the primary reason he was loaned out last season was a fallout with former head coach Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea had initially planned for Jackson to remain at the club and compete for the No.9 spot alongside Joao Pedro and Delap before the dispute changed those plans.

While Chelsea intend to give Jackson the opportunity to impress, sources refused to rule out a departure before the end of the transfer window should the right offer arrive.

Sources close to Jackson’s camp have indicated the striker is open to staying at Stamford Bridge, though a final decision over his future is yet to be made.

Alonso may face a wait before fully assessing Jackson due to the striker’s involvement in this summer’s World Cup with Senegal, with Mamadou Sarr also set to represent the African nation at the tournament.

Chelsea are scheduled to travel to Sydney in late July for the opening leg of their pre-season tour, before moving on to Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia.

The Blues are set to have around 10 days before the new Premier League season begins on the weekend commencing August 22.
