Chelsea are facing a significant decision over Enzo Fernandez this summer, with the midfielder continuing to be linked with a departure from Stamford Bridge.

The 25-year-old’s desire to leave would not have surprised many Chelsea supporters, given the circumstances surrounding his recent behaviour at the club.

Fernandez made bombshell comments criticising Chelsea following their break-up with Enzo Maresca, while simultaneously flirting with a potential move to Real Madrid.

The Argentine was also spotted waving at travelling Chelsea supporters after the match at the Stadium of Light at the weekend, further fuelling speculation over his future.

Chelsea do not want to part ways with Fernandez, according to sources, but equally do not want a player whose commitment is not fully dedicated to the club.

If the Blues receive an offer of £120million, around £13million more than what they paid for him in January 2023, they will sanction a transfer this summer.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso officially begins his role at Stamford Bridge on July 1, with pre-season training at Cobham set to begin later in the month.

While Fernandez will not be present for those early sessions, Alonso will be working alongside the club’s sporting leadership team, made up of five directors, on transfer business.

Chelsea are currently targeting at least three new signings, with a starting-level centre-back, a central midfielder and a left-sided winger all identified as priorities this summer.

Sources say BlueCo are aligned with Alonso in wanting to build the right culture at Cobham, which is part of why they are open to allowing Fernandez to leave if his commitment is in question.

Chelsea want a resolution to the Fernandez situation as soon as possible, whether that means the Argentina international making a U-turn or departing before the World Cup campaign begins.

Fernandez himself will reportedly not want prolonged speculation distracting him during his country’s defence of the World Cup this summer, adding further urgency to finding a quick solution.

With £120million potentially incoming, the sooner Chelsea resolve the Fernandez situation, the sooner Alonso and the club’s leadership can focus on completing their three key signings.
