Tony Parker, a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, is set to take on a head-coaching role overseas after a celebrated playing career.
According to Donatas Urbonas of BasketNews, Parker is projected to become the head coach of ASVEL Villeurbanne in France’s EuroLeague competition.
The deal is expected to make history financially, representing a landmark moment for the sport in France.
“According to BasketNews sources, Parker is projected to earn around €1.2 million annually, a figure that would likely make it the richest coaching contract in French basketball history,” Urbonas wrote.
Parker retired from the NBA in 2019 following his final season with the Charlotte Hornets, ending a decorated playing career.
During his playing days, Parker won four NBA Finals titles and claimed an NBA Finals MVP award, cementing his legacy as a Spurs legend.
His connection to ASVEL Villeurbanne stretches back years, with Parker buying a stake in the franchise in 2009 before signing with them during the 2011 NBA lockout.
Parker later sold his shares in the club and transitioned into the role of club president before this latest move to the dugout.
The financial scale of his coaching contract puts it in a different league entirely compared to his predecessor at the club.
Pierric Poupet, the former ASVEL coach, earned a salary of “about 10 percent” of Parker’s deal, according to BasketNews, highlighting the size of the club’s investment.
ASVEL Villeurbanne finished the most recent EuroLeague season with an 8-30 record, placing 20th in the competition, giving Parker a significant rebuilding task ahead.
