Aston Villa are reportedly considering a move to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez this summer as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of next season.
The Villans have been linked with the versatile defender, who has won two Premier League titles during his time at Anfield. Gomez is currently facing an uncertain future at Liverpool and could be open to a fresh start elsewhere. According to a report from the Daily Mail, Villa are among the clubs monitoring his current situation.
“Villa have yet to make any official approach but it is understood Gomez appeals because of his versatility and if the price is right.”
Gomez’s current contract with Liverpool runs until 2027, but he is no longer viewed as a guaranteed starter in the backline. As a result, the 29-year-old is believed to be open to exploring options away from Anfield.
The England international is currently valued at around £13 million, though Liverpool could reportedly demand a fee closer to £25 million. The Reds are also said to be willing to consider offers if the right proposal arrives.
However, Villa may need to act quickly if they are serious about signing him. Gomez has also attracted interest from AC Milan, Besiktas, and Crystal Palace, all of whom could move ahead in the race should Villa delay negotiations with his representatives.
The former Charlton Athletic defender is valued for his versatility, with the ability to operate at centre-back or full-back when required. Since joining Liverpool in 2015, Gomez has won every major trophy available, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League.
So far, he has made 274 appearances for the Reds, providing 12 assists despite never scoring a goal. Last season, he featured in 33 matches across all competitions and contributed two assists, although he was often used as a substitute.
According to FotMob data, Gomez recorded a 79.7 per cent passing success rate, completed 50 per cent of his dribbles, and of aerial duel won. His overall defensive contribution tally for the season stood at 46.
Nevertheless, his experience and adaptability — particularly at Champions League level — could make him a valuable addition to Unai Emery’s squad. He may also be viewed as a long-term successor to Tyrone Mings, who turned 33 this season and is entering the final year of his contract.
The only thing Villa need to concern is his injury history. Gomez seems to have suffered various kind of injuries and fitness issue during his stint in Anfield. He has had ankle injury, calf injury, hamstring injury, achilles tendon problem and patellar tendon problem. The Catford-born centre back had to be sidelined for 51 games in the last injury back in 2020/21 season. The worst one was his first injury, cruciate ligament tear, in his first season. He was benched for 56 games in the 2015/16 campaign alone.
