Maresca’s now-famous outburst last summer made Chelsea’s most urgent transfer need crystal clear before the Italian left the club entirely.
Just 24 hours before Maresca’s extraordinary press conference, sources revealed Chelsea planned to find internal solutions to Levi Colwill’s ACL injury rather than sign a new centre-back.
Maresca fumed publicly in response, saying: “We are trying to find a solution internally but the club know exactly what I think.”
He added: “I think we need a central defender. We are looking for an internal solution but as I said, the club know exactly what I think.”
Chelsea had actually been pursuing a starting-level centre-back even before Colwill’s injury disrupted their defensive plans last summer.
The Blues attempted to bring in Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, but the Spain international chose Real Madrid instead, leaving Chelsea without their primary target.
Following that setback, Chelsea continued searching the transfer market but refused to sign a centre-back who did not fit Maresca’s system perfectly.
In January, Jeremy Jacquet was identified as the ideal option, but the French defender chose Liverpool and will move to Anfield in the upcoming summer window.
The entire episode exposed how little transfer power Maresca actually held at Stamford Bridge during his time as head coach there.
Xabi Alonso, who begins his role on July 1, has been appointed as manager rather than head coach specifically to ensure he holds real operational power, including over transfers.
Chelsea’s sporting leadership team, made up of five directors, will prioritise signing a central defender this summer, with Alonso understood to be fully aligned with the club’s vision.
Colwill performed outstandingly in the final matches of the season after returning from his ACL injury, and he remains central to the club’s long-term defensive plans.
However, Chelsea will not want Colwill playing every game during Alonso’s debut season, given the serious nature of the injury he suffered in August 2025.
A number of centre-backs could leave Stamford Bridge this summer as the club looks to find the right long-term partner to complement Colwill’s talents in defence.
