Manchester United are preparing a significant midfield overhaul this summer, with Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali emerging as a primary transfer target ahead of the new season.
Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, cited by Sky Sports, reports that United are close to completing a deal for the 26-year-old Italian international midfielder.
United are also said to be finalising a separate move for Atalanta’s Ederson, signalling serious intent to transform their engine room before next campaign begins.
Juventus have registered interest in Tonali as well, but the Serie A giants currently cannot match the financial package the player is seeking from potential suitors.
That financial gap appears to have handed United a stronger negotiating position as they push to secure one of the Premier League’s most recognisable midfield profiles.
Tonali brings proven top-flight experience, Premier League familiarity and the kind of intensity and intelligence that Newcastle supporters have come to value during his time at St James’ Park.
His spell in England has not been without complications, but when fit and in form, he offers control, aggression and genuine quality in possession across ninety minutes.
United’s midfield is clearly in transition, with Casemiro departing, Manuel Ugarte’s future under serious doubt, and Michael Carrick seeking a more dynamic and energetic central unit.
Sky Sports has reported that Atalanta value Ederson at approximately £45 million, with United believed to be in advanced discussions over a deal for the Brazilian ball-winner.
Signing both Ederson and Tonali would represent a dramatic shift in United’s midfield identity, combining power and pressing with passing range and Premier League experience.
The Sun has also reported that United feel confident about completing a double swoop, with Carrick keen to build his squad around a more commanding and cohesive midfield core.
Newcastle, however, retain considerable leverage in any Tonali negotiations, and reports suggest the club could demand a fee in the region of £80 million or higher.
That price tag makes the deal complicated, particularly if United simultaneously commit significant funds to landing Ederson from Atalanta in the same transfer window.
The Juventus interest adds another dimension to proceedings, and a return to Italy would carry emotional weight for Tonali, though the financial gap may ultimately prove decisive.
United’s midfield shortlist extends beyond Tonali and Ederson, with Adam Wharton, Tyler Adams, Alex Scott, Ayoub Bouaddi and Christos Mouzakitis also under consideration ahead of the summer window.
