Manchester United have identified Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as a primary transfer target, with the French international viewed as a dream signing at Old Trafford.
Fabrizio Romano reports that United admire Tchouameni hugely and believe he could deliver the same transformative impact Casemiro produced when he first joined from Real Madrid.
The financial obstacle is significant. Any deal to bring Tchouameni to Old Trafford would cost more than 100 million euros, placing enormous pressure on United’s transfer budget this summer.
United’s interest is straightforward to understand. Tchouameni offers power, composure, tactical intelligence and extensive experience with both Real Madrid and the French national side.
He operates effectively as a defensive midfielder, contributes in a box-to-box capacity, breaks up opposition attacks and helps regulate the tempo of matches throughout ninety minutes.
The Casemiro comparison carries genuine weight inside the club. When Casemiro arrived at United, he immediately provided authority, leadership and defensive security that the squad had desperately lacked for some time.
United’s hierarchy now believe Tchouameni could deliver a younger, more sustainable version of that same stabilising effect across several seasons at Old Trafford.
With Casemiro’s departure confirmed, the midfield requires a new leader and a commanding physical presence to anchor the unit under manager Michael Carrick going forward.
The picture has shifted considerably because of Kobbie Mainoo’s remarkable revival. The Athletic reported that Mainoo rejected a 40 million pound move to Chelsea last summer after a difficult spell under Ruben Amorim.
That decision has proven significant. The 21-year-old has rediscovered his best form under Carrick and now sits firmly at the centre of United’s long-term midfield planning.
Carrick has been clear about his priorities in the transfer market. United’s official communications confirm the manager wants midfielders who complement Mainoo rather than simply adding names to the squad.
That distinction matters. United are attempting to construct a midfield with genuine balance rather than collecting expensive individuals who do not naturally fit together on the pitch.
Tchouameni fits that specific requirement. A midfield trio built around Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes and Tchouameni would represent a serious and well-structured unit capable of competing at the highest level.
Mainoo would gain greater freedom to express himself going forward, Bruno would continue providing creativity, and Tchouameni would supply protection and power from a deeper position behind them.
United face a difficult calculation this summer. Tchouameni represents a potentially transformative acquisition, but allowing one expensive target to consume the entire transfer window would carry its own serious risks.
