Aston Villa and their all proven elements of fortune, how many can they win more?

Aston Villa have all their elements of fortune to lead them their Europa League success this year, which can help them win more.

Aston Villa’s title drought finally ended last night as John McGinn lifted the Europa League trophy following their emphatic 3-0 win over Freiburg in the final at Tupras stadium, Istanbul. It is a long 30-year wait but definitely does not stop here. Villa boss, Unai Emery himself outlines the ambition to win more. He shared his comments after winning his fifth trophy of the tournament as reported in Nationalnews.

My dream when I arrived here was play in Europe, play for trophies. This is the first one we are achieving, we played a semi final before and the experiences we are having like today is important with how we can get better.

Winning the Europa League does open the door for more opportunities in silverware. The Lions have qualified to the Champions League too. The upcoming trophy to win is probably the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg on August, 12. Interestingly, Emery will be facing off against his former side, either PSG or Arsenal.

The next ones on target are surely the domestic ones such as FA Cup, EFL League Cup and perhaps Premier League and later if not too far-fetched Champions League. How possible are they to clinch? Only time can tell. What’s more important is to enjoy the progress.

However, the more vital thing to win more trophies is how well Villa can keep the element of fortune on their side. Such is surely more unpredictable. Yet, that’s for the future. Now, what are their elements of fortune which brought to their Europa League success this year? Here they are.

Unai Emery

He is undoubtedly the main figure of the club’s fortune in their Europa League success. Literally, Emery is the master of the tournament, winning four times already previously with two non-elite sides.

His current triumph with Aston Villa only confirms his fate as the non-elite team specialist manager in Europe. His spell in Arsenal and PSG was never remembered for his success but on the contrary. His failure there, plus in the Russian elite team, Spartak Moscow, only proves how taking charge of the giant teams does not seem to be his strong suit.  If Villa could really keep him for long, the Spanish boss, then more silverware could be clinched.

Istanbul

The capital city of Turkey has been another element of fortune. Istanbul has been more English-team friendly since its first time hosting the final of continental competition.

The 2005 UCL and 2019 UEFA Super Cup contributed to Liverpool’s victory while the 2023 UCL edition helped Manchester City to complete their treble winners. This year, it is Aston Villa who enjoys such fortune.

Emiliano Martinez

Emi Martinez is literally the serial winner. He never suffers loss in any finals he has featured so far. The Argentine international won FA Cup and Community Shield 2020 with Arsenal, Copa America 2021 and 2024, plus Finalissima 2022 and 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina and this time with Villa.

Having the 33-year old goalkeeper in the team is a privilege. Martinez excels in shot stopping during crucial moments, something he has done over and over again in big games like the tournament’s finals.

It is interesting to see if he will stay next season or eventually depart. The former Arsenal man has been linked to a move to The Lions’ Premier League rivals.

John McGinn

Last but not least, there is captain McGinn, who specialises in ending the title drought in each team he has played for in his career. The Scotsman did it with St Mirren to win their first major title in 26 years back in 2013. He did it again with Hibernian three years later when helping them win the Scottish Cup after waiting for 114 years. This year, he finally does it with Villa.

The versatile winger has also contributed in helping Scotland national team qualify to major international tournament in EURO 2020 after 22-year of absence. This year, McGinn was also part of the Tartan Army squad as they made their comeback to the FIFA World Cup final round after their last appearance in the 1998 edition. He is one rare distinguished player Villa should keep.
