Aston Villa discreetly interested in Nottingham Forest key man for summer transfer move

Aston Villa has been reportedly keen on signing one of Nottingham Forest’s key men for a summer transfer move.

The Lions have secured a berth in the Champions League next season after hammering Liverpool 4-2 yesterday. Their focus is now only on bolstering the squad besides winning the Europa League title in the midweek.

According to the report from the BBC, Aston Villa are one of the clubs which are linked to Nottingham Forest man Neco Williams.

“Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Everton are all understood to have made discreet enquiries to understand Williams’ situation heading into the summer.”

His contract situation

The Welsh international is actually still tied up to his contract extension, which he penned one year ago. His new contract expires in 2029.

However, the 25-year-old full-back has been in his fine season. He has been contributing well for The Tricky Trees to reach the semi-final in the Europa League before losing heavily to Villas, with two goals and four assists in 51 games. One of his vital goals was his equaliser against Villa in their Premier League duel last month.

No wonder that a number of Forest rivals are keen on signing him to strengthen the squad, especially those which will be competing in Europe. Nottingham, sadly, would have to be absent in the continental competition due to their current position in the standings. They are in the mid-lower table due to their disastrous campaign prior to Vitor Perreira’s arrival.

The former Liverpool man moved to the Midland side in summer 2022 for only £15 million. Since then, Williams has made 158 appearances with four goals and nine assists in total. His current value is £21.81 million.

 His improving form with Forest

Neco Williams is the product of the Liverpool academy. His decision to ply his trade has proven to be a crucial decision in his career. The versatile left back only made 33 appearances for the Reds and struggled for regular minutes there.

However, since he moved to the City Ground, he has displayed his true quality. A full back who can be deployed in both flanks also excels at helping out the attacking build-up.

His current boss, Vitor Pereira, even reserved his compliment for the full-back with 55 international caps, as reported by Birmingham Mail.

“He has been very consistent with quality defending and attacking since we have been working together. He is a very good player.”

The Portuguese boss could not even guarantee his stay for the next season, as he deserves everything, including moving to greener pastures. Based on the data in FotMob, Williams made a high defensive contribution up to 231 times this season, including 91 tackles, 43 interceptions and 83 clearances.

His successful passes reach up to 82.2%, with 44.8% successful dribbles and 56.6% winning duels. No wonder that Villa are interested in signing him due to his ability to cover both Matty Cash and Lucas Digne. In fact, he can be an ideal successor to either, should one of them be sanctioned to exit from Villa Park.
