Manchester United have reignited their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham, with the club’s recruitment staff intensifying discussions around the 20-year-old ahead of the summer window.
The Red Devils had originally tracked the England Under-21 international while he was still playing for Sunderland, only to miss out when Dortmund moved decisively to sign him for around £33 million last summer.
Bellingham endured a rough start to life at the Signal Iduna Park, failing to nail down a consistent role in Niko Kovac’s side during the first half of the campaign. That difficult early period has given way to an impressive run of form, with the midfielder starting 18 of Dortmund’s last 20 matches and accumulating over 2,500 minutes across 44 appearances this season. His physical presence and versatility across multiple midfield positions have caught the eye of scouts from England’s biggest clubs.
United are not alone. Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain have all been credited with interest in Bellingham, who carries a contract at Dortmund until 2030. The Bundesliga club are reluctant to sell and are expected to demand a significant fee, with figures in the €50-60 million range reported. Real Madrid’s interest carries its own complexity given that Jude Bellingham is already at the Bernabeu, though that has not deterred the Spanish giants from monitoring the situation.
At Old Trafford, the midfield rebuild is a summer priority. Casemiro is leaving at the end of his contract, while Manuel Ugarte’s days appear numbered after a frustrating spell since his arrival. INEOS are reportedly targeting up to three new midfielders with a budget understood to be around £150 million. Bellingham fits a profile United favour, particularly given his ability to operate in both a holding and box-to-box role.
One former Sunderland teammate, Dan Neil, previously described him as “a freak of nature” due to his physical attributes. Whether that admiration translates into a concrete bid this summer will depend on whether United can agree a fee that Dortmund find acceptable, which at this stage looks far from straightforward.
