Aston Villa man stranded in a dilemma ahead of the summer transfer window

The current Aston Villa man, Harvey Elliott, appears to be stranded in a dilemma before the summer transfer window.
The Liverpool loanee, Harvey Elliott, was making a loan move to Aston Villa last summer in order to revive his career. Last season, he was only mainly the backup player. The 23-year-old midfielder made only 28 appearances with The Reds in the 2024/25, contributing five goals and three assists. They were less than his time under Jurgen Klopp in the previous seasons, particularly in the 2023/24 and 2022/23 campaigns.

Sadly, in Villa Park, he barely features in the first team. So far, with practically only three games left, Eliot has only made nine appearances and registered one goal instead. This surely is disappointing for him.

The unwanted signing?

The reason behind his dismal stint on the West Midland side is probably related to the issue at the beginning of the season. Emery is apparently not so keen on signing him on a permanent deal.

In the deal, the Lions are expected to sign him permanently with £35 million after playing 10 times in the Premier League. Yet, the Lions seem to prefer to modify the deal to enable more flexibility for Emery in selecting him for the team. So, they attempted to renegotiate it by removing such a clause for the obligation to buy after 10 matches in the league. Unfortunately, the Reds refused to change the deal or recall him.

So far, Eliot has only appeared in four league games, only one of them in the starting eleven. In the other competitions, he has only featured four times, once playing the whole 90 minutes, plus made one appearance in the EFL League Cup against Brentford, where he bagged his only goal in a Villa shirt.

Aston Villa’s boss eventually explained the difficult situation for the Liverpool loanee as reported by Birmingham Mail.

“I explained it at the beginning of the season when we decided how we needed to manage his situation as a player and as a person as well. Of course, as a person, it is a difficult season for him because he is not playing matches. We got this responsibility when we signed him, but then Liverpool had their responsibility when we were speaking in December and January, in the transfer window.

“And of course, each club has their responsibility and has their decision. One thing is clear – I always spoke with him, being honest always, and of course, he’s a fantastic guy, a fantastic guy.”

His future

So, how is Elliot’s future? The England U21 player is bound to return to Anfield in the summer, but his chance to play regularly under Arne Slot is still very unlikely. It is still unclear if the Dutch boss or the new boss, should Slot be dismissed, will give him a more vital role in the team and simply reintegrate him in the main squad.

One thing for sure: Villa would not sign him or even extend his loan deal. Elliot probably does not match Emery’s player profile he is looking for. His contract with the Reds still runs till 2027, but his departure, either on loan again or a permanent move, is more imminent.
