Celtic are in the market for a new head coach this summer, and former player Michael Gray believes Robbie Keane would represent a compelling appointment at Parkhead.
The 45-year-old Irishman spent time on loan at Celtic in 2010 during his playing career and has since built a credible coaching record away from the British spotlight.
Keane managed Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel and then Ferencvaros in Hungary, winning league titles with both clubs and steadily building a reputation as a tactically astute and driven manager.
Gray, speaking to GOAL, stated that Keane’s trajectory echoes that of other former players who have succeeded in management, citing Steven Gerrard’s early career in Scotland as a useful comparison.
“If he can bring any of his experience from what he achieved as a player to his management style in Britain or the UK, eventually the Premier League, then I think he’s going to be a great addition,” Gray said.
The other name circulating at Celtic Park is Ange Postecoglou, the Australian who led the club to multiple trophies before departing for Tottenham Hotspur, where he was eventually dismissed.
Gray acknowledged that Postecoglou carries significant goodwill from the fanbase but questioned whether the manager would be willing to return to a club he has already taken as far as he could.
He framed the choice as a question of experience versus enthusiasm, with Keane offering something fresh and forward-looking compared to the known quantity that Postecoglou represents.
Celtic currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership table, three points behind leaders Hearts, with three matches remaining including an Old Firm derby against Rangers.
The urgency of the coaching decision is compounded by competitive pressure from Edinburgh, with Hearts making a sustained title challenge that has tested the Parkhead club’s depth and consistency throughout the campaign.
