Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are squaring off in the Europa League semifinal this midweek.
The Lions are entering their crucial stage of the season as every game starting from now will make or break the season target. This week, they have this tricky encounter with Nottingham Forest again, the side they could not beat on the road two weeks ago, in the more decisive match of the week, Europa League semifinal. Then, they would play host to them next week, with the home match against Spurs in between on Monday.
Vitor Pereira’s side has been in fine form and Europa League would be the only way to salvage their season as they are stranded in the lower table side at the moment due to turbulent times with changing managers in the mid season.
On the contrary, Aston Villa is in contention for a Champions League return. They are in fifth in the standings and only in need of one more win to seal one berth. However, Unai Emery’s men have just suffered a bitter 1-0 loss on the road against Fulham last week. It ends their six unbeaten run in all competition but it also proves how John McGinn and Co can still potentially stumble, especially in the away fixtures.
This should be concerning as Forest, on the contrary, has been impressive with eight unbeaten runs in all competitions. In their last outing, for example, they were able to rout Sunderland 5-0 on the road, whereas in the previous week, Villa had to wait for the last minute to secure a narrow 4-3 win against the same opponent at home in a thrilling game.
Moreover, Villa will be sweating as they have a defensive midfielder crisis due to the injury of Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana plus the omission of Ross Barkley, the regular deputy of them in the Europa League squad. Emery would need to come up with a creative or even unexpected solution instead of just relying on Lamare Bogarde only as the only choice in this situation.
Nottingham Forest v Aston Villa kicks off in City Ground at 8 pm UK time. It is staged at the same time as the other semifinal between Sporting Braga v SC Freiburg.
