Newcastle United have found themselves at the centre of transfer speculation this week, with Sandro Tonali linked to a potential exit and Arsenal reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
Sources indicate that Newcastle have been quietly preparing for the possibility of Tonali’s departure for some time, despite the issue only surfacing publicly in recent days.
Lyon midfielder Tyler Morton has emerged as one of the club’s leading internal candidates to strengthen the midfield should a replacement be required.
The 23-year-old has impressed in Ligue 1 this season, building on the promise he previously showed during his early years at Liverpool.
Morton’s performances in France have not gone unnoticed, with Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest also believed to be tracking his progress closely.
However, Newcastle are understood to be leading the race at present, having already carried out extensive background work on the player.
“Although it’s only come out in the last few days, the prospect of Sandro Tonali leaving Newcastle is very real and not a recent thing,” one source explained.
“That doesn’t mean it’s 100% happening, but the club are realistic about the possibility and want to make sure all bases are covered.”
“Morton is someone Newcastle know well and they’ve done some work on,” the source added, highlighting the club’s long-standing admiration.
“He only joined Lyon last summer but their finances mean they’d have to consider offers, and Newcastle sense an opportunity for a possible bargain there.”
Morton was previously described as “exceptional” by Jurgen Klopp, and his limited opportunities at Liverpool were often attributed to competition rather than ability.
The England Under-21 international has featured in 28 matches across all competitions this season, benefiting significantly from regular minutes in France.
While he is not actively pushing for a quick exit, a clearly defined role at Newcastle, particularly replacing a key figure like Tonali, could prove highly appealing.
