Coin collectors across the UK are searching through their spare change for a rare 50p piece that could be worth hundreds of pounds.
The coin has been described as the most sought-after 50p currently in circulation.
Despite being issued relatively recently, it has gained legendary status among enthusiasts due to a striking production error.
Collectors believe the coin could still be hiding in everyday pocket change.
The coin features Sir Isaac Newton and was first produced in 2017.
While many versions of the Newton 50p exist, a small number are believed to contain a rare minting flaw.
The error was highlighted by TikTok creator @CoinCollectingWizard, who has built a large following by identifying valuable coins.
In a widely viewed video, he said: “This 50p could have an error making it valuable.”
According to the collector, the key detail appears on the obverse side featuring Queen Elizabeth II.
He explained: “What you are looking for is for the obverse to have several extra lines across Queen Elizabeth’s portrait.”
“If your coin has these lines, then congratulations you have found it.”
The flaw is believed to be the result of a minting process error known as a die clash.
Importantly, the extra markings are not scratches or damage caused by circulation.
“They aren’t grooves scratched into the surface of the coin,” he said.
“But rather whiskers standing slightly proud of the surface.”
This distinction is critical, as post-mint damage significantly reduces a coin’s value.
The exact number of these error coins in circulation remains unknown.
However, experts believe they are extremely rare.
Some examples have reportedly appeared on the secondary market for more than 100 times their face value.
That level of scarcity has helped fuel demand among collectors and casual finders alike.
Anyone who believes they have found a rare coin is advised to seek a professional valuation.
Experts assess factors such as condition, rarity, and historical interest.
Improper handling or cleaning could reduce a coin’s value significantly.
For many, a simple check of loose change could uncover an unexpected windfall.
