Jamie Carragher has warned that the coming days could define West Ham United’s Premier League season.
The former Liverpool defender believes the pressure is mounting rapidly as the Hammers attempt to claw their way out of trouble.
Nuno Espirito Santo has managed just two victories since taking charge, leaving West Ham five points adrift of safety.
The league table reflects a growing sense of unease around the London Stadium, with supporters increasingly concerned about the direction of travel.
West Ham’s current winless run has stretched to six matches, deepening fears that momentum is slipping away at a critical stage of the campaign.
West Ham’s next assignment comes against Fulham, who currently sit 13th in the table.
The importance of the fixture was amplified after Marco Silva’s side secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest earlier this week.
Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, underlined how damaging another missed opportunity could be for West Ham.
He said: “It’s a big game for Fulham, but it’s absolutely huge for West Ham. Nuno’s been in there for a little bit of time, and they haven’t quite kicked on.”
Carragher also pointed to the widening gap between West Ham and safety as a growing concern.
He said: “That gap is getting too big for comfort, and I think they’ll be really worried. Before they get to the transfer window, they have to cut that gap somehow.”
Despite their struggles, West Ham are approaching a stretch of fixtures that could offer a lifeline.
Their next four matches are all against sides they are capable of beating on paper.
Three of those games will be played at the London Stadium, giving Nuno’s side a chance to build momentum in front of their own supporters.
The upcoming schedule includes home games against Fulham, Brighton and Nottingham Forest, alongside an away trip to Wolves.
Results elsewhere could also play into West Ham’s hands if rivals above them falter.
Forest face a daunting encounter against Manchester City, while Leeds are preparing for a difficult away trip to Sunderland.
A positive swing of results could quickly narrow the gap and transform the mood around the club.
West Ham’s task has been made harder by the absence of key players due to the Africa Cup of Nations.
El Hadji Malick Diouf and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are both away on international duty.
The pair have been regular starters and provide much of West Ham’s energy and athleticism in wide areas.
Their contributions at both ends of the pitch have been a crucial part of the team’s structure this season.
Ollie Scarles and Kyle Walker-Peters are expected to step in, but the loss of experience and physical presence is significant.
While West Ham should still be capable of picking up points, Nuno will be frustrated by the timing of these absences.
The coming weeks could ultimately determine whether West Ham remain in the Premier League or slide further into danger.
