Jamie O’Hara believes Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly would walk straight into Liverpool’s starting lineup if a transfer materialised in the upcoming January window.
The 19-year-old midfielder has struggled for minutes this season, playing only 87 minutes in the Premier League and failing to start a single top-flight match.
His limited game time has cost him his place in the England squad for matches against Serbia and Albania.
England manager Thomas Tuchel warned that Lewis-Skelly must secure more regular minutes if he hopes to make the squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Several unnamed Premier League clubs are now monitoring his situation ahead of the January window.
Despite Arsenal insisting they are not planning to sell players in January, O’Hara says Lewis-Skelly would be a clear starter at Liverpool.
O’Hara argued that current options at left-back have not performed at a high enough level.
“I love Robertson, but his performances this season mean they (Liverpool) are probably looking elsewhere,” O’Hara said.
“Kerkez hasn’t been good enough. Lewis-Skelly would start for Liverpool. He doesn’t start for Man City or Arsenal. Outside of that, it’s up for debate. He’d start for most Premier League sides.”
O’Hara went on to praise the teenager’s talent and potential.
“Lewis-Skelly needs to be playing. I think he is a brilliant footballer. As a future star, he is going to be a [regular] England international. He’s a young kid who had a quick rise to fame last season [but] he’s a hugely talented footballer.”
O’Hara believes Lewis-Skelly may consider asking Mikel Arteta for a loan if Arsenal refuse to sanction a permanent move.
“If he genuinely wants to get into that World Cup squad and he needs to play football, he will go and ask Arteta,” O’Hara said.
“He’d say, ‘Look, I want to go out on loan in January, I need to go on loan to another Premier League side and play every week’.”
Not everyone agrees with that view.
Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn previously dismissed the idea of a loan being realistic.
“He won’t go out on loan,” Winterburn said.
“There’s no way I could see him going out on loan. With all the competitions Arsenal are in, he’s going to get plenty of game time.”
With England competition intensifying and January fast approaching, Lewis-Skelly’s situation is increasingly becoming one of the most closely watched storylines at Arsenal.
