Aston Villa were interested in a former Real Madrid youngster during the summer transfer window, Monchi has revealed.
Villa parted ways with their president of football operations in September, when he left the club but took up a new advisory role with co-owners V Sports.
Monchi told the Spanish media that Villa were one of the Premier League clubs keen on 22-year-old Deportivo La Coruña winger Yeremay Hernández. The other clubs linked with the former Real Madrid man included Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and AFC Bournemouth.
The former Sevilla sporting director claimed that Villa were in discussions to potentially sign Hernández, according to La Voz de Galicia.
“They said he wasn’t going to leave because he didn’t want to, and neither did the owners,” said Monchi.
“They were very clear that they weren’t going to sell. They want him to be the flagship of Dépor in the Primera. If they can keep him and the kid wants to, great.”
Hernández has been growing in importance at Depor, currently in the Segunda Division, the second tier of Spanish football. Born in Las Palmas, the winger joined the former Champions League club when they were still in the third division.
He made the switch in 2017 after spending two years playing for Real Madrid at the academy and youth levels. Hernández was promoted to the Deportivo first team in 2021 and helped them to win promotion to the second division in 2023/24, a year after they missed out in a promotion play-off match.
Hernández has made 106 first team appearances for the team once known as Super Depor thanks to their famous exploits in the 1990s, registering 26 goals and 10 career assists for the Galicians so far.
Last season, he racked up 20 goal contributions but Deportivo had to settle for a lower mid-table finish. In 2025/26, the winger, who is part of the Spain Under-21 squad, has netted three goals in eight games.
Depor hope he can lead help them return to La Liga next season. They reached the October international break unbeaten and in first place in the second division.
