Former Aston Villa star hails ‘extended family’ after transfer to Premier League rivals is completed

Jacob Ramsey shared an emotion social media statement and farewell message after signing for Newcastle United from Aston Villa.

Ramsey, a product of Villa’s academy, left his boyhood club with two years left on his contract after he and Villa were unable to agree terms on a new deal. With profit and sustainability rules and UEFA regulations needing to be addressed, Villa’s hand was forced.

Ramsey was eventually released for £39 million plus 4 million add-ons, with Newcastle United as his destination. Recently, he shared a farewell message to the club, the fans and his teammates through his Instagram account, @jacobramseyy.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle in a reported £44 million deal and praised his former teammates and Villa fans in a post on Instagram:

It’s impossible to put into words what playing for Aston Villa has meant to me. From being a young fan in the Holte End to living my dream and scoring in front of it. This club has been an extended family to me, and I’ve got memories for life – from making my Premier League debut, experiencing Champions League nights back at Villa Park and scoring my first goals in those competitions.

To everyone at Aston Villa, both at the academy and in the first team, thank you for your support, belief and guidance. You’ve helped me become the person and player I am today. I’ve played with some of the best & made friends for life. And finally to the fans – thank you for the love and backing. To represent you, as a boy from Birmingham, has been an absolute honour.

Onto the next chapter now, but wish you all nothing but the best in the future. Thank you for everything!!

The skipper’s reaction

One of a number of teammates who reacted to Ramsey’s departure was Villa captain John McGinn, who reflected on Ramsey’s integration into the first team set-up and positive attitude.

Having previously discussed the ‘unfair’ limitations of the financial regulations faced by Villa, he identified the human cost of losing a player who didn’t really want to leave and who the club didn’t really want to sell.

“A perfect example of how an academy player should handle the transition to the first team,” McGinn posted on Instagram.

“Always humble, respectful and willing to learn. It’s been a privilege to share the dressing room with you and enjoy some special moments together on the pitch. A sad day losing a top player and person and one of our own, but it seems to be the way football is set up these days! All the best, JJ.”
