Aston Villa star ‘excited’ about new deal before the start of the Premier League season

Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne is adopting a positive outlook ahead of the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

The France international extended his Villa contract last week, securing his future until the summer of 2028.

Digne spoke to Villa TV this week and reflected on the mood in the squad after the final pair of pre-season friendlies against Marseille and Villarreal last weekend.

“Now, everybody is excited to start the new season,” said Digne. We worked really hard during the pre-season in the US and at Bodymoor too. Now, we’re just waiting to be back at Villa Park.

“We want to enjoy with the fans the first game and hopefully the first three points of the season to start in the best way. Everybody is excited for sure, and I think for the fans, it’s the same.”

Digne spoke of his faith in manager Unai Emery and offered an optimistic philosophy in advance of the new campaign both in the Premier League and in Europe, where the Europa League is a source of excitement for the 32-year-old and his teammates.

“It’s our goal to reach every time, Europe,” he continued. “We are happy to stay in Europe next season. It’s not Champions League, but it is Europa League; it’s one of the main competitions. We want to go (as) far as we can and maybe to have a trophy.”

Digne’s deal

The former Everton and Barcelona man also shared his statement after signing a new contract. The fullback with 52 international caps also mentioned his hope for the new season with the strong European campaign and the possibility of winning silverware at the end of the season.

The former Everton and Barcelona left-back was in tremendous form last season and shared his thoughts on signing a new contract with Villa, whom he joined in 2022.

“It was a good decision with the gaffer and the club,” said the full-back, who is in our predicted line-up for opening day.

“Everybody was agreed. I want to stay, and I’m really happy here, enjoying my football, back with the national team, and it was really important for me to show my love to this club, and the club too. It was a really good thing for me, and hopefully for the club too.”
