This tweak effortlessly produces more hip turn (& longer drives)

Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.

Hip turn is a crucial component for generating power in your golf swing. If you are limited in your turn to the top, it becomes much more difficult to get the length necessary to generate clubhead speed.

Getting an effective hip turn is easier for some golfers than others. When you’re young and flexible, producing a massive turn is relatively simple. But as you get older and your body doesn’t move quite as well, it becomes more and more difficult.

If you’re one of those aging golfers (or you have an injury that prevents a proper turn), there’s hope yet. With one simple setup tweak, you can turn like you did in your younger years and blast drives down the fairway like you did in your prime.

Instructor Kelan McDonagh explains how in the video below.

1 tweak for more hip turn

Limited hip rotation results in lower clubhead speeds and shorter drives. However, if you can turn back just a bit more, you can instantly fix that problem. All you’ve got to do is make a simple tweak in your setup.

“As [GOLF Top 100 Teacher] Mike Adams always says, it’s in the setup as to how we’re gonna swing,” McDonagh says. “There’s certain things we can do to a players stance in how we orient their feet in order to generate a bigger turn in the backswing.”

To get a baseline for the amount you turn back, grab an alignment stick or golf club and hold it across your waist. Then, make a turn to the top and make note of how far back you can turn.

Now, take your stance again, but this time drop your trail foot back just a touch and flare your trail foot out just a bit. Then, make that same turn to the top of the backswing.

“What I see generally with players who have tight hips, especially in the trail side, when they get back, they’re gonna stop and then lift,” McDonagh says. “When we drop the right foot and flare it, the hip keeps rotating and the club can stay more on plane.”

If you’re someone struggling to get as much hip turn as you need, give this tweak a shot. It should help you make a fuller turn and get you into a much better position to generate power.
