After 18 holes at Royal Portrush, we have an extremely crowded leaderboard on our hands. There’s a five-way tie for the lead at four under. Most of them are relatively unheralded pros who haven’t won majors, except for one, 2022 U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.
But one big problem lurks right behind them: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. The three-time major champion, who has never won the Open, fired a 68 on Day 1 to get within one shot of the lead. He’s tied with three others, including Tyrrell Hatton.
Rickie Fowler went two under in the opening round, while Rory McIlroy settled for a one-under 70 after briefly reaching three under himself.
The leaderboard is sure to experience some major movement as the action continues on Friday.
