Whenever you’re attending a tournament, one day of wet weather can have long-lasting ramifications on course conditions for both the players and the spectators. I was reminded of this when I read a dispatch from GOLF senior writer Dylan Dethier after the U.S. Open at Oakmont last month.
“I spent this weekend tiptoeing gingerly around the worst of Oakmont’s swamps, desperately hoping to avoid the sort of day-ruining wipeout I saw from a few unlucky spectators,” Dethier wrote. “Between dew, sprinklers, rain — there’s almost always something that’ll get your shoes wet, and that makes things far less pleasant when you’re typing in the media center later that evening, they crank the A/C and suddenly you can’t feel your feet. Note to self for Royal Portrush: Waterproof shoes. And extra socks.”
Given the near-certainty of wet weather at Royal Portrush at next week’s Open Championship in Northern Ireland, I couldn’t help but wonder what our on-site team planned to wear to protect their feet from the elements. Below are the selections they sent me — maybe their picks will inspire your next shoe purchase.
Senior writer Sean Zak: “These aren’t FULLY waterproof,” he says. “But they’re pretty close, and they have a grip system that’s unlike anything I’ve used before. Wore them all weekend at Oakmont!”
News and features editor James Colgan: “I recently learned about the existence of Reebok Club C golf shoes, and I’m obsessed,” he says. “As a keen white sneaker-wearer while attending tournaments, I learned the hard way at Oakmont that the conditions can be … muddy. Adding a golf shoe option that LOOKS like one of my all-time favorite white tennis shoes? Yeah, I’m pumped.”
Senior writer Dylan Dethier: “I’m pumped to try these True All Day Ripstops,” Dethier says. “Not just because they’re a small shop in the Pacific Northwest but because they come highly and independently recommended.”
