Pro's emotional made cut at Rocket Classic told a bigger story

The final two holes of Friday’s second round of the 2025 Rocket Classic might have been the most important of Will Gordon’s career.

That’s not hyperbole.

The 28-year-old pro is playing at Detroit Golf Club in the final start of a major medical exemption he received due to an inflamed vertebrae issue that caused ulnar nerve tension down his elbow. With his major medical up after this week, Gordon needed to make the cut in order to keep his PGA Tour membership. He arrived at the 17th tee on Friday knowing his future was hanging in the balance. He needed to birdie the final two holes and get some help from the rest of the players in the field to make the cut and maintain conditional status.

Gordon birdied the 17th and then holed a six-foot birdie putt on 18 to get to six-under-par. After holing the putt, Gordon gave a fist pump, and then the emotions started pouring out of him. He had done all he could, but he would have to wait over two hours to find out if his efforts were good enough to maintain membership.

“It’s not in the back of my mind, it’s in the very front,” Gordon said after the round. “But that’s why you play is to put yourself in moments like this, hopefully win golf tournaments. But I’m really proud of myself for executing under that pressure.

“I was just proud of keeping my head in it, fighting to the end,” Gordon said later. “That’s what I do. It hadn’t been the prettiest kind of last three, four years, but I always fight. I’m just really proud of that, that’s kind of who I am.”

Gordon waited for two-plus hours to see what his professional golf fate would be. The cut line yo-yoed between six and seven under par, and then Gordon received a few breaks, the golf gods seemingly rewarding his fight.

Zach Johnson three-putted from four feet on the 17th hole. Brandt Snedeker double bogyed the last, and then Michael Kim three-putted his last hole to push the cut to six under and throw Gordon’s career a needed life preserver.

“Once I left yesterday, didn’t look at my phone,” Gordon said Saturday after shooting another three-under 69 to move to nine under for the tournament. “I mean, from what I heard from my friends, and Zach Johnson called me and gave me the full rundown of what happened and just called to encourage me, which I really appreciated. Yeah, it was a pretty wild several hours, so I’m just super thankful it all worked out. I was proud of myself no matter what, but to get a big reward for it was a huge bonus.”

When Gordon finishes his round on Sunday, he will earn the 0.644 points needed to retain conditional membership and be able to play the rest of the season and out of the nos. 126-150 category.

So far this season, Gordon has missed nine of 13 cuts but sits at 136 in the FedEx Cup thanks to top-10 finishes at the Farmers Insurance Open and the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. To keep full membership, he needs to make it into the top 100 by the RSM Classic, the final event of the fall schedule.

Gordon knows he still has an uphill climb, but a gutsy cut-line run, the biggest of his career, has given him some life. It’s up to him to make the most of the fruits of his emotional charge.

“This is a game that kind of get what you deserve, and unfortunately I haven’t played well enough to, you know, give myself more breathing room,” Gordon said on Friday. “It’s kind of crazy it’s kind of come down to this, but again, you get what you earn in this game and this is what I kind of earned myself. Just try to use it as motivation for whatever comes next.”
