Arsenal’s gaffer, Mikel Arteta, has waxed lyrical about the impact of the club’s set piece coach, Nicolas Jover, and the match winner, Gabriel, for his goal contribution in the narrow 1-0 win over arch-rivals, Tottenham.
In the enthralling contest, Arteta had to rely on their set piece prowess to get the match winning goal, which was their 24th goal from a set piece under Arteta, which is undoubtedly the highest in the Premier League thus far.
Mikel Arteta spoke about the methodology of attacking and defending, and also took some time out to say some great things about the set piece coach he recruited from Manchester City, Jover,
“It’s a very specific phase of play but if we were only dependent on one player, then we have a problem,”
“We haven’t built our methodology or our way of attacking or defending any phase of play in that way. So we are going to adapt to whatever players that we have and we will still be very efficient. Hopefully, we can continue to do that.”
“In his field, in other fields, as a person, the relationship that we have, that’s why I made a decision to bring him to City when I was there and then to Arsenal.
“Him and the staff, they have injected the belief to the players that there are many ways to win football matches and that this is a really powerful one. He’s given us a lot, so big compliment to all of them.”
Gabriel has improved leaps and bounds since his move from LOSC Lille Metropole a couple of seasons ago, and his partnership with William Saliba is one of the best in Europe, as Arsenal continues to rake in clean sheet after clean sheet, home and away. It is even amazing to know that Arsenal has not lost an away match in the Premier League since December 2023.
“I think the way he has evolved, first of all as a person, and then on his role at the club, at the team has been phenomenal.
“It’s been great to watch. This is why we are here. This is one of my passions to give players the environment, to give players the support, the education, the coaching, to grow and to prepare them for the life and to prepare them to get to levels that probably they didn’t think before.
“And Gabi is certainly one of the best examples of that. Why? Because he loves what you do. He applies himself incredibly well and he wants it. And when that happens, normally good things happen to this kind of people.”
Having set pieces in the club’s repertoire is a big plus and I hope it continues in the course of the season.
