Can Tottenham be Trusted to do the Needful?

Following Arsenal’s victory over Bournemouth on the Saturday lunch time fixture, Manchester City responded with an Erling Haaland-inspired victory over Wolves, which paved the way for Arsenal fans to focus on Manchester City’s next set of opponents – two back to back away clashes against Fulham and Tottenham.

I wasn’t expecting much from Tottenham at Anfield, as their record on that ground has been quite atrocious, and in one hour of football, Ange Postecoglou’s side were already four goals down, much to the chagrin of those associated with the club. The introduction of James Maddison and Richarlison brought a late rally, but the outcome remained inevitable, another Tottenham loss.

Since the 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest in early April, Tottenham lost emphatically to Newcastle, managed to gain some confidence after they were initially white washed in the North London Derby, suffered a routine defeat to the resurgent Chelsea side and the defeat at Anfield. Following these string of tumultuous results, what confidence does one have that they would be able to do the needful against Manchester City?

Let’s look at the history books for a bit – White Hart Lane is one of those grounds that Manchester City has struggled to get results in recent campaigns. Prior to the narrow FA Cup win this season, Manchester City’s last win against Tottenham in the Premier League was in April 2018, with Tottenham getting the better of Pep Guardiola’s side in the last five Premier League games on that ground. I’m sure it would potentially play on the minds of both sets of players psychologically, but both teams are miles apart in terms of quality, and more importantly, quantity, or depth in simpler football terms. With first choice fullbacks, Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies, out for the rest of the campaign, Postecoglou has fielded Emerson Royal in that position and he has unleashed his inner Titus Bramble, putting up shocking performances in that role week in week out.

The Manchester City juggernaut is in full force, and the Champions League exit to Real Madrid allowed Guardiola to lay all his eggs on a Premier League basket, even if he has a Manchester Derby FA Cup final to look forward to. On the back of that putrid performance against Crystal Palace, one can only assume that there would be one winner when both sides meet in Wembley.

Arsenal can only do their part and win the remaining games against Manchester United and Everton, but we would really be hopeful that Tottenham can do the needful.
