Aston Villa man of the match credits Unai Emery preparation for ‘massive’ Premier League win at Spurs

Matty Cash has given the credit for Aston Villa’s win over Tottenham Hotspur to the team’s meticulous work at Bodymoor Heath under Unai Emery.

Villa upset the odds and won 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, moving temporarily into the top half of the Premier League table thanks to a third league victory on the bounce.

“It was a massive win,” Cash told the club’s official website.

“It’s a really tough place to come. Before the game, we were speaking about how we’ve been here and won before, so we know what it takes.

“I think we were resilient all around the pitch.”

Cash played a huge role in the win. As the last man defending when Spurs cleared a Villa corner, he volleyed a wonderful pass from midfield that was brought down smartly by Lucas Digne on the right and turned into Emi Buendía‘s path.

The in-form Villa substitute shifted the ball out of his feet and curled a pinpoint finish across Guglielmo Vicario to win the match, Villa’s fifth victory in a row in all competitions.

According to the player who played the spectacular pass before the pass, the secret key to the win was all in the preparation.

“It was a nice pass!” said Cash. “It paid off. We work on set pieces and second phases and always try and hit the furthest man. It was a nice contact, and a great win.”

A memorable afternoon for Cash

Villa’s right-back is in the form of his career. Often unfairly maligned, Cash has masterfully shut out the noise in the first two months of the season and was a steady performer even while many of his teammates took some time to get their 2025/26 sea legs.

He scored the team’s first Premier League goal of the season and has maintained his standards into Villa’s improved run. He was named as the man of the match in north London on Sunday and came up with the pass of the season to crown the moment.

He couldn’t have picked a better afternoon for it. Cash is public enemy number one when Villa play Spurs thanks to the bizarre lingering animosity sparked years ago by… well, who even remembers.

The Poland international was booed throughout the match on Sunday and must have found his individual contribution and its widespread recognition very satisfying indeed.

Cash managed a goal and an assist in 27 Premier League appearances last season. He only has a goal so far this term but has emphatically demonstrated his worth.

Villa return to Europa League action on Thursday night, taking on Go Ahead Eagles in their second successive European fixture in the Netherlands.

Manchester City visit Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday.
