Former Aston Villa star buzzing about ‘magic’ Emi Buendía goal at Tottenham Hotspur

Aston Villa became the most famous football club on the planet last week for reasons that had nothing to do with them. On Sunday, one goal stole the show.

Villa came back from a goal down to win 2-1 away at Tottenham Hotspur, briefly climbing into the top half of the Premier League after a less than impressive first two months of 2025/26.

Morgan Rogers fired in an excellent equaliser but it was overshadowed on Sunday afternoon by the truly outstanding team goal that turned one point into three and helped to further banish the hangover of six matches out of the traps without a win.

Emi Buendía swept in the finish but it was the build-up that got tongues wagging for the right reasons.

Matty Cash picked out Lucas Digne with a phenomenal volleyed pass after Spurs cleared a Villa corner. Digne pulled it down on the right, flicked the ball into the path of Buendía, and that was that.

Former Villa goalkeeper Shay Given was on Match of the Day punditry duty on Sunday and told presenter Mark Chapman exactly what he thought of the winning goal.

“This is the best goal I think I’ve seen all season,” said Given.

“That’s me getting excited probably but it comes from a corner, we see it come in, they clear and obviously [John] McGinn and Cash are at the back.

“McGinn just nods it back to Cash but watch this for a strike off Cash. It’s unbelievable, the technique, out to Digne and his two touches are incredible.

“And after that obviously Buendía does a bit of magic himself, onto his left foot swinger…it’s just an unbelievable goal.”

‘Please be a goal!’

Given isn’t necessarily a neutral when it comes to Villa matches. The former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper played 37 Premier League matches for Villa between 2011 and 2015.

He helped lead Villa to the FA Cup final in his last season at the club and even had a short spell as Paul Lambert’s assistant manager.

“Honest to God, I was off the sofa, I was excited,” Given added on MOTD.

“I was going ‘Please be a goal, please be a goal!’ It’s like a PlayStation goal… It is just world class from Aston Villa. What a goal.”

Sunday’s winner has been widely praised by supporters and pundits alike. It secured Villa’s fifth consecutive win in all competitions and third in the Premier League.

Manager Unai Emery will be desperate to maintain that form into the next two matches and they have another quick turnaround.

Villa return to the Netherlands for a second successive Europa League match on Thursday. They’ll take on Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer before their biggest test of the season so far.

Manchester City will visit Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday.
