There have been clues, recently, about the consumption abilities — or tendencies — of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton. At the Open at Portrush, Hatton regaled the press with his “three Guinness” rule. It’s good to have limits, of course. A week later, he and Rahm were together doing a LIV Golf press conference talking about how they’ve come to enjoy the same types of wine.
A lot of time spent together as Legion XXIII teammates, traveling the world and having plenty of team dinners — they like the Italian reds. Well, Rahm really does and, as Hatton put it, he just does “whatever the big man” wants. Which is a great strategy for most things, in moderation…
But it sounds like Hatton and Rahm pushed the limits on a recent night together, August 17th to be exact. Rahm had just claimed LIV’s season-long individual title and Hatton had just received a special phone call from Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald: Hey pal. We want you on the team at Bethpage.
“That was a very nice phone call to receive,” Hatton said Wednesday from the DP World Tour’s BMW PGA Championship. “I was very — yeah, I was over the moon to be honest. So Jon had just won individual, so we had a bit of a tear-up. Yeah, that was a messy night, yeah.”
Oh, boy. What does a messy night look like for two teammates who love a drink?
“A sign of things to come maybe at Bethpage?” asked one reporter.
“Yeah, I do not want to feel that bad the next day,” Hatton replied. “Yeah, that was aggressive. I won’t go into details of what state that I woke up to.”
Except, that’s exactly what Hatton proceeded to do — go into nearly every single detail.
“If you want to know, I’ll tell you,” he said, fully aware of the television cameras fixed on him and the microphone in front of him and, at this point, every eye in the room turned in his direction.
“When I did actually get back into the room, I fell across the bed sideways, and face down in that position, and then I had woken myself up throwing up in that position. I’ve then fallen back asleep in that position, and then as I’ve woken up, I had gotten sick all down my arms, both sides, all down my shirt.”
You need visuals of this to really appreciate Hatton the storyteller, who is emphasizing it all with his hands and face. Check out the video below.
